Day 8 - June 4
Another hiking day!
Got up at our regular 6:30 am, showered and had breakfast. On the bus by 8:00 am. Today we headed to Cetina Canyon. It was about 40 min on the bus and then our hike began. The beginning of the hike was through thick underbrush with some uphill. About 2.5 miles in to the hike we began the serious descent into the canyon. The view of the Cetina River winding through the canyon was spectacular. I was suprised that our group of 20, all people in their 60's, 70's and 80's, got down without injury. It was a bit challenging. But we did! At the bottom of the canyon, we were picked up by a boat and headed up the river. Such a beautiful canyon and the river was wonderful. We stayed on the boat until we arrived at Omis, a small village. We spent some time there exploring the village. Matt and I hiked to the top of the hill where we could see more views. Of course, we had some gelato.
Boarding the bus again, we drove a short distance to a local home where we would have lunch and a specialty unique to the region - Soparnik. This is a pie like pastry with chard in the middle. The woman - Nicolina - talked to us about the tradition while making the dish. It was then put in an oven and cooked with hot coals. I liked it ok. Matt liked it a lot. We had some finger food along with it and of course, grappa. I've decided this is a drink I need at home. I drink it and immediately want to go to sleep!
After lunch, we headed back. For those who wanted, we were left off the bus to walk the last 3.5 miles along the water back to the hotel. Matt and I, of course, opted to do this. It was very hot but the walk was beautiful. I was completely exhausted by the time we completed our walk though. I stopped and got a latte at the hotel coffee shop before heading up to our room.
We donned our swimsuits and headed to the hotel pool for a dip. It felt absolutely wonderful.
Showered and cleaned up, we boarded the bus yet again! We are going to a local restaurant to watch the sunset and eat dinner together. The food was good but I got some sort of meat dish that was about three time more than I needed to eat. I'm starting to get tired of eating so much. I need to stop. But it was a very nice dinner and I have sure enjoyed the people on this trip.
Back in our room, Matt is already falling asleep as I type this. I hope I can sleep tonight. I have had a hard time every night and I'm going to try and skip the Ativan tonight.
